Why LLPs Are Critical in Family Law
Family law matters in Colorado are often emotionally charged and legally complex. At the same time, many families are looking for more accessible, efficient ways to navigate divorce, parenting issues, and post-decree matters. That’s where Licensed Legal Paraprofessionals (LLPs) can play an important role.
Colorado is one of the states leading the way in expanding access to legal services, and LLPs are now a recognized part of that effort, particularly in family law cases. Thrive Family Law is proud to have one of Colorado’s first LLPs, Tracy Spiegel, available to guide clients through the often challenging landscape of domestic relations cases. Tracy’s 25 years of legal experience make her an invaluable asset to families navigating family law issues. Learn more about Tracy.
What is an LLP?
In Colorado, a Licensed Legal Paraprofessional is a legal professional licensed by the Colorado Supreme Court to provide limited legal services in specific practice areas, including family law.
LLPs must meet rigorous requirements, including:
Specialized education and training
Passage of a licensing exam
Ongoing continuing legal education
Compliance with ethical and professional standards
Like attorneys, they are regulated by the Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel.
What Can Colorado LLPs Do in Family Law Cases?
Colorado LLPs are able to assist clients in many common family law matters, including divorce and legal separation, allocation of parental responsibilities (parenting time and decision-making), child support and spousal maintenance, and modification and enforcement actions.
LLPs often provide legal information, draft and review court pleadings and forms, assist with financial disclosures and parenting plans, and help clients prepare for hearings and procedural steps.
Why should I work with an LLP?
Colorado’s LLP program was designed to address a real problem: many people need legal guidance but are priced out of full attorney representation, or don’t need it for every aspect of their case.
LLPs increase access to legal services, offer a more cost-effective option for certain cases, and help people navigate the court system without retaining an attorney. Some LLPs, like Thrive Family Law’s Tracy Spiegel, have even more years of experience in family law than many associates, giving people access to decades of legal expertise.
If you’re navigating a family law matter in Colorado and wondering what kind of legal support is right for you, Thrive Family Law is here. Our LLP, Tracy Spiegel, brings nearly 20 years of family law experience to each case and is dedicated to helping families navigate their disputes with care and understanding.
